Large numbers of starlings arrive from the continent, drawn by the relative warmth of our island climate. As dusk descends, these birds prepare for their nightly ritual, a communal roost that transforms the skies into a living, breathing work of art.

As evening approaches, flocks of starlings appear from every direction, gathering above their chosen roosting sites. Tens, sometimes hundreds of thousands of birds swirl together, moving as one. This phenomenon, known as a murmuration, is more than just a flock, it’s a complex, ever-changing dance.

The birds contract and expand, merge with other flocks, and shift in patterns that seem almost choreographed. Watching them twist, twirl, and ripple across the sky is a humbling reminder of nature’s incredible intricacy.

How to Experience a Murmuration

  1. 🧣Wrap up warm – Standing by a wintery reedbed can get surprisingly chilly, so layer up. A hot drink in a thermos doesn’t hurt either.

  2. 🌇Arrive early – Get to your vantage point at least half an hour before sunset, or even earlier. You’ll want a clear view of both the roost site and the sky above.

  3. 💫Stay and watch – Let the spectacle unfold before your eyes. As the last birds settle in for the night, you’ll feel a quiet sense of awe and, yes, the cold won’t seem quite as harsh when you carry that warmth inside with you.
