East Devon District Council’s Countryside Team has introduced an exciting new accessibility feature at Seaton Wetlands Nature Reserve, further reinforcing its commitment to inclusive outdoor spaces.

The newly installed picnic table has been thoughtfully designed to ensure ease of access for all visitors. The round table includes two dedicated access points, allowing wheelchair users, mobility Scooters and families with buggies to pull up comfortably. Seating for up to six people is provided, complete with supportive backrests and additional spaces in between, creating an inviting area for friends and families to gather and enjoy the surroundings.

     

Enhancing both accessibility and learning opportunities, the centre of the table features six engraved wildlife illustrations, each accompanied by braille. These tactile engravings highlight some of the species commonly found at the reserve, including the Kingfisher and Water Vole, offering a valuable sensory experience for visitors.

The picnic table is conveniently located near the Discovery Hut, where refreshments are available for a suggested donation, and within close proximity to public toilet facilities. This thoughtful placement ensures visitors have everything they need to relax and enjoy the award-winning nature reserve.

Councillor Richard Jefferies, Portfolio Holder for Environment – Nature & Climate, said: “This is a wonderful addition to Seaton Wetlands. It is encouraging to see the East Devon Countryside Team continuing to prioritise accessibility and explore innovative ways to make our natural spaces welcoming to everyone. The design is not only practical and inclusive but also blends beautifully with the natural character of the reserve.”

Our aim is to make Seaton Wetlands as accessible as possible, ensuring that every visitor can enjoy what the reserve has to offer - whether that is a peaceful place to relax or an opportunity to learn more about local wildlife.
